All licensees receive a courtesy renewal reminder email 45 days prior to license expiration. If you did not get an email, your email address is likely invalid with KREC. Instructions to complete all online processes are available here. Most renewal questions can be answered by checking the FAQ section of the KREC website.

Renewing an Active License

Renewal to active status requires 12 hours of continuing education.

The two-year renewal fee is $125.00 for a salesperson and $175.00 for a broker.

If a licensee is unable to complete the necessary continuing education (CE) by their expiration date, they may renew to inactive status OR renew late once the hours are complete. A $100 late fee is applicable for all renewals submitted after the expiration date.

Licensees who submit an incomplete renewal or who do not renew must stop performing activities that require a license after the current license expires.

If a supervising or branch broker does not renew by their expiration date, another broker must take over (REC-450 Change Supervising Broker Form). Otherwise, all affiliated licensees must move to another company or change to inactive status and the company must close (REC-440 Close Company Form).

An expired license must be renewed within 6 months of expiration or it will be forfeited. If you hold an active license and have not completed the required CE when your license expires, you may renew your license on inactive status. Be mindful to choose the correct status when renewing your license.

CE completed on the same day as a successful license renewal applies only to that renewal cycle and does not carry over. To ensure CE is credited toward your next renewal cycle, please wait 24 hours after your renewal has been successfully processed before completing additional CE.

Renewing an Inactive License

Renewal to inactive status does not require CE but the hours must be completed before the license can return to active status. Licensees who request reactivation after two years on inactive status will be subject to additional education requirements. Licensees who request reactivation after five years are also required to retake the license exam.

The Commission does not have a “referral” license status. A licensee may be affiliated with a company on a referral basis, however this does not place the license on inactive status with KREC.

An active license is required to complete a referral transactionLicensees on inactive status cannot perform activities that require a Kansas real estate license. A licensee remains inactive until the licensee reactivates their license to active status or fails to renew and their license expires.

The 12-hour CE requirement must be completed when the license is reinstated to active status, however it does not need to be completed by the license expiration date for an inactive license.

If the licensee has been inactive for two or more years, CE totaling six hours for each full year the license has been on inactive status must be completed prior to reactivation. This is in addition to the 12 hours required for the immediate past renewal period. If the license has been inactive for five or more years, the licensure exam must be passed in addition to the CE requirements prior to reactivation.

An inactive license will expire if not renewed. A $100 late fee is applicable for renewals submitted after the expiration date.

If a supervising or branch broker requests inactive status, another Kansas-licensed broker must take over as the responsible broker to keep the company open and maintain affiliated licensees within the company (Change Supervising Broker Form, REC-450). Otherwise, all affiliated licensees must move to another company or change to inactive status and the company must close (Close Company Form, REC-440).

An expired license must be renewed within 6 months of expiration or it will be forfeited.
